PostSubject: The Great Scorpius Debate!!!   Thu Aug 30, 2018 7:28 pm

One of the most common memories Yarnies share is of the classic Tales from Old Gnarly adventure “Arena of Agony,” in which ThorAx and Esme journey to an Oizys Temple of Pain. It doesn't all go well and they wind up in - wait for it - the Arena of Agony.

There they face Scorpius who is, what are the odds, a giant scorpion. *Everyone* who read it remembers a large panel taking up the bottom third of a page midway through the adventure, a glamour shot of Scorpius in all his arthropod splendor, per helpful attempted fan art here:

RARGH!

HOWEVER
From fans various artistic recreations of that image, there has emerged a let’s say minor contrast of opinions regarding a specific detail. Some people remember a giant purple scorpion (helpful illustration I spent exactly two minutes on):

Others remember, with equal certainty, a giant yellow scorpion. As shown:

As the subject won’t ever seem to die, I am opening this comments for people to weigh in and peacefully lay this one to rest. So have at it, but please be mindful of our shared love of the classic Old Gnarly adventures. We’re all Yarnies here.

Cheers,
Loggerhead

EDIT: I regret everything!

I know from personal experience that previous iterations of this conversation have not gone well! Nevertheless in the spirit of fun I'll kick the ball out...

The scorpion is yellow. I drew a picture of it for art class and distinctly remember having to fetch a new . yellow crayon from another classroom when I used up all of ours.

(I got a C- for plagiarism) (and selfish use of classroom resources!)

Weighing in for the purple because I recall its being the exact shade of a t-shirt I owned. Not picking a fight though. Just sharing.

Said this before, Rachel (and everyone) – nothing you remember is reliable. Childhood memories are highly malleable per literature on pediatric forensics and false memory. Don’t make me google it for you.

I never saw the issue but what if there were two separate print runs and the colors somehow got inverted?

Edit: sorry for lengthy
By late 40’s we’re into the Craftint era. They would print a base color plus grids of tiny dots combining to form different colors. The dots had to be CMYK cyan, magenta, yellow, black. You could get lots of colors by mixing different combinations and sizes of dots. It’s not about looking great, it’s about speed and cheapness.
So, purple = magenta and blue dots mixed over white paper, each set out on different screens as templates for etching the metal. Yellow = yellow.
There’s no simple way to “accidentally” invert the colors. If there were two print runs it was an editorial decision. Maybe one kind of ink was more expensive? (DC Comics dropped yellow entirely for a period of years for $$ reasons; and SY didn’t have such deep pockets).

Also I remember its being yellow

Oh My God. PEOPLE.

This is a textbook example of color constancy: the brain interprets contrasting colors strikingly differently depending on baked-in assumptions about surrounding light conditions which can vary.
i.e. this is literally The 2015 Dress, Stupefying Yarns edition.

I truly hate to say this. I know that it’s a purple scorpion and I’m raising the possibility that people who say they saw yellow are not real Yarnies. I think that there may be another group trying to create discord and doubt among us. Most likely related to whoever’s responsible for erasing SY in the first place.

Couldn’t that argument apply equally to the people who say they saw purple?

ALSO DID NO ONE READ MY POST ABOUT COLOR CONSTANCY

@inflictress1

I know what I saw and that I myself am a real Yarnie. That and logic are all I can go by.

So you’re actually claiming that Flubber, Spink and about a half dozen more of us are agents of some mysterious enemy?

I think the False Flag Yarnies theory makes a lot of sense and opens up a lot of disturbing questions. It wouldn't be hard. Could we ourselves be leading the enemy right to the SY material, via one or more moles. @Flubber is there a way to close these security holes?

As a senior member of the Yarnie community this is a little embarrassing. I’ve been an SY fan since the early 1940s and have met a great many of you (SmartAx is a rare exception) and I’ve never doubted your passion for being here, and I never will.

And not that it matters: yellow.

Strong disagree. Given the unaddressed danger of infiltration by unknown parties I am choosing to leave this community for my own safety and advise others to do so as well. Attempts to trace or contact me will be met with aggressive legal measures. xo

Sorry to see you go, truly.

And for the rest of us, let's keep the Yarnies what it was meant to be? We're here for the Yarns.
